About Us

Kelly & Salerno Communications provides a full range of marketing and communications services, specializing in advancing public awareness of issues and ideas. The firm provides brand development and management, media relations, organizational promotion, advertising, Web design, event management and corporate communications services to a range of clients that include educational, cultural and health care organizations as well as public television producers, authors and philanthropies.

For more than a decade, Kelly & Salerno worked closely with Bill Moyers and his production company, Public Affairs Television, to leverage the impact of his public television series on such critical topics as improving end-of-life care, addiction, and environmental pollution. The firm has also done brand development projects, events and media relations for such clients as PBS, the Seagrams Foundation, The History Channel, Time magazine, SHOWTIME, the Alliance for the Arts, American Symphony Orchestra, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Let's Live magazine, The After School Corporation, and the National Park Foundation.

Prior to founding Kelly & Salerno Communications, Karen Salerno was Vice President of Communications and Colby Kelly was Director of Strategic Communications at Thirteen/WNET, the flagship public television station in New York City. At Thirteen they led a seminal effort to reposition and rebrand the public television station and pioneered an aggressive communications strategy to advance press coverage beyond standard television page reviews, increase media penetration and raise the public profile of PBS series. Before joining Thirteen, where they met, both principals in Kelly & Salerno had extensive careers in public relations in New York City working with corporate, non-profit and government entities to promote a broad range of media, education and cultural projects.

Kelly & Salerno Communications rolled out the media relations campaign for the Centennial of Greater New York in 1998, launched a $125 million New York City public schools after-school education initiative in 1999 funded by George Soros, marketed a summer arts festival at the World Trade Center for the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council in 2000, helped SHOWTIME galvanize understanding of the causes of school-base violence in 2001, launched the weekly series NOW with Bill Moyers in 2002, and focused attention on THE HISTORY CHANNEL's support of National History Day in 2003, among other projects.

The agency specializes in branding television programs and their corollary educational products to achieve a high level of viewer awareness and participation. Assembling project-based teams, Kelly & Salerno works with program producers to title a television project, create a brand identity and key graphic image, enlist promotion partners, and create an array of print and electronic marketing materials with integrated graphics and consistent editorial content. During a campaign Kelly & Salerno leverages resources by coordinating and integrating the promotional assets of multiple stakeholders.

As the agency for Bill Moyers' production company, Kelly & Salerno has achieved unprecedented impact for his public television projects by focusing media attention on the issues forming the foundation for the documentary. For the landmark series on end-of-life care in Fall 2000 called On Our Own Terms: Moyers on Dying, Kelly & Salerno recruited media partners including Good Housekeeping, Modern Maturity, Money and Time magazines as part of a campaign that achieved coverage in publications with a combined circulation of more than 400 million readers. Kelly & Salerno also established a partnership with Barnes & Noble resulting in large display posters throughout their chain of bookstores.
